Privacy Policy

Last updated: February 2026

1. Introduction

Guide to Docs ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our Chrome extension ("Guide to Docs") and our website (guidetodocs.com).

Important: The extension does not have user accounts. All recordings (screenshots, steps, and text you capture) are stored locally in your browser until you choose to export them. We do not collect, store, or have access to the content of your guides or the pages you record.

2. Information We Collect

Website (guidetodocs.com)

  • Analytics: We use Google Analytics to collect usage data such as pages viewed, approximate location (country/region), device type, and browser information when you visit our website.
  • Cookies: Google Analytics may set cookies on our website. You can control cookies through your browser settings.
  • Communication: If you contact us (e.g. by email or a contact form), we process the information you provide to respond to you.

Chrome Extension

  • Usage analytics: We send anonymous, event-based data to Google Analytics (Measurement Protocol) to understand how the extension is used. This includes: events such as extension installed, onboarding completed, recording started/stopped, export format used (e.g. Google Docs, PDF, Word, clipboard, ZIP), session edit type (e.g. reorder, delete step), settings changed (setting name only), and errors (context and message for debugging). We also send a session identifier and a persistent anonymous client identifier. We do not send the content of your recordings, screenshots, URLs of pages you record, or any personal data.
  • Local data: Your recordings, screenshots, and preferences are stored only in your browser (Chrome storage). When you export to Google Docs or Google Drive, that data is sent to Google under Google's privacy policy, not to us.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide, maintain, and improve our website and extension
  • Understand usage patterns and fix errors (e.g. via aggregate analytics and error reports)
  • Respond to your communications if you contact us

4. Information Sharing and Disclosure

We do not sell your personal information. We may share information only as follows:

Service Providers

We use Google Analytics (website and extension) to process usage data. Google's use of data is governed by its privacy policy. We do not share your recording content with any third party; that data stays on your device or, when you export, goes only to the destination you choose (e.g. Google).

Legal Requirements

We may disclose information if required by law or in response to valid legal process, government or law enforcement requests, or to protect our rights, property, or safety.

5. Data Security

We use industry-standard practices to protect data in transit (e.g. HTTPS, secure APIs). Analytics data is sent to Google Analytics. Your recording data is stored locally in Chrome and is not transmitted to our servers.

6. Data Retention

Analytics data is retained according to our Google Analytics configuration. We do not retain your recording content because we do not collect it. If you contact us, we retain correspondence as needed to respond and for legitimate business purposes.

7. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on your location, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete personal information we hold (e.g. contact details if you wrote to us). For analytics: you can use browser add-ons to opt out of Google Analytics, or adjust your browser cookie settings. The extension does not require an account; you can clear its local data at any time via Chrome's extension and storage settings.

8. Cookies and Tracking Technologies

Our website uses Google Analytics, which may set cookies. You can control or block cookies in your browser. Our Chrome extension does not use cookies; it sends only the event-based analytics described in section 2 above.

9. International Data Transfers

Your information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your own. We ensure appropriate safeguards are in place to protect your information in accordance with this Privacy Policy.

10. Children's Privacy

Our service is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware of such collection, we will take steps to delete the information.

11. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date.
